It's only when you get to college that you will be confronted with the real ordeal of the college admissions essay. So what is this test all about?Colleges use a variety of tests to see how students compare to others in their class. One of these tests is what's called the Collegiate Learning Assessment, or CLAI. The CGCC uses the CLAI as a part of their rigorous admissions requirements. This is the same test that the New York City public schools use and has been used in many other states and countries around the world. The CGCC uses the CLAI as a part of their extensive review process. The test itself is based on a standard essay format, which is fairly standard, but is designed to measure you as a student and your comprehension and writing skills. The first section of the test consists of four questions. One of them requires that you read a passage out loud to a computer screen. It's a basic introduction to literature, so you should be able to memorize the passage well en ough that you can tell if it's too long or too short.Another side note: the computer screen portion will probably make you feel nervous, because it's something you've never done before. But don't worry, you will learn how to do this! You will not be required to read aloud from a textbook. And another side note: if you find yourself struggling with one of the passages, then it's OK - you're allowed to stop the test, no questions are required. As long as you remember what you read before moving on. You may also choose to read a few passages out loud, but your final mark will only be determined by the essays you submit.Writing test at CGCC is just an essay.
